As part of growing and supporting local artists and companies Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre has hosted aKa Dance Theatre Company as its Company in Residence for the last two years - providing rehearsal space for research and development as well as support developing financially and artistically.

About aKa Dance Theatre Company

Also Known As (aKa) Dance Theatre Company was co-founded by Jennifer Grant and Joe Garbett in early 2014, based in Taunton as company in residence at Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre. The company is dedicated to keeping dance and theatre alive in the South West and beyond advocating art in Somerset

Jenny and Joe, aKa co-founders, have both been involved in the Arts Centre for many years - training with Taunton Youth Dance Company (which Jenny now leads). Since becoming Company in Residence and working with the centre more closely, aKa have worked on a funded tour of schools and educational settings and a Heritage Lottery Funded Project exploring the centenary of WW1 as well as gaining Arts Council Funding and staging their first professional show.

2016 has been a busy year so far for aKa.

/ Resolution 2016 \

Rehearsals at Tacchi Morris Arts Centre took place ready to present Next Door  (aKa's latest work) at Resolution 2016 at The Place, London. With Next Door ready and rehearsed, Sofa number 2 (yes, we have already been through one sofa!) was wrapped up and on its way to the city. We performed alongside Poekert & Bysheim and BAMBULAproject who both presented mature and thought provoking works. The evening was a success for aKa leaving with a great audience response and brilliant reviews. It is really rewarding to represent the South West and Somerset at such a big occasion. You can read the reviews here…

/ Café Choreographique \

Earlier this month aKa’s first work A Real Fiction (which recently celebrated its 2nd birthday!) took to the stage at The Point, Eastleigh. Café Choréographique is a studio event for both emerging and established dance artists and companies to test new performance ideas in front of an invited audience. A Real Fiction feedback was very positive - “warms yet surprises the audience member” and “It appeals to all – like an onstage Meme”. It has always been a pleasure to see this work in different venues and for different audiences across the nation – with this in mind you will definitely be seeing A Real Fiction in many more different settings throughout 2016. Watch this space…

aKa Dance Theatre Company.Artistic Policy

aKa Dance Theatre Company has an intelligent and raw approach to physical and visual mediums which blends a provoking artistic identity. Imagination together with play allows each creation to lie somewhere between fiction and reality. Power driven statements, commanding physicality and striking images are daringly woven together injecting organic moments that exist and then resonate beyond performance.
