Peace Child & The Samburu Fund
PEACE CHILD & THE SAMBURU FUND
by Roger Stoakley
This exhibition showcases photographs of young Kenyans and their families taken by Roger Stoakley arising from The Samburu Fund set up by himself and his wife after Heathfield Community School’s production of PEACE CHILD in 1990.
Two Kenyans taking part in the production stayed with the Stoakley family. As a result of subsequent invitations to visit Kenya the Stoakleys came across many destitute children in need of education, medication or simply just food. One of the first to be helped was Ambrose, a cripple from a nomadic warrior tribe in the north of the country. He was brought to England in the hope of working out a future for him back
in his native country.
Clad in warrior clothes and with his spear in hand he described life in his tribe to many schools across the county including Heathfield School. He is now headmaster of a school in Kenya.
The photographs in the exhibition relate to many of the people met and helped over the years, some of whom have in fact been supported by Heathfield School pupils.
